American Airlines Official in Haiti Indicted on Drug Smuggling Charges - 2004-10-16

The head of security for American Airlines in Haiti has been indicted on charges of smuggling millions of dollars' worth of cocaine into the United States.

An indictment unsealed Friday in Miami, Florida says Stephanie Ambroise used her position as security chief at the Port-au-Prince airport to ensure packages of cocaine reached the United States.

The court documents allege Ms. Ambroise was paid $2,000 for every kilogram of cocaine shipped from Haiti, and that she and a Haitian drug trafficker made the shipments for several years, ending in 2003.

Ms. Ambroise joins at least five former Haitian officials who have been arrested in the United States this year in connection with drug trafficking.
