Anti-War Protester Leaves Vigil to Be With Ailing Mother

The grieving mother who started an anti-war demonstration near President Bush's Crawford, Texas ranch has left the protest site because her mother had a stroke.

Cindy Sheehan left for Los Angeles Thursday to be with her ailing mother. Mrs. Sheehan said she will be back as soon as possible, if it is possible, but that the anti-war vigil near the ranch will continue.

Mrs. Sheehan's son, Casey, was killed in Iraq last year. She traveled to Crawford earlier this month, demanding to talk with the vacationing president and calling for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

Mr. Bush has said he sympathizes with Mrs. Sheehan but has declined to meet with her. The president says he will not pull troops out of Iraq prematurely.
