At Least 7 Migrants Die in Boat Accident Off Puerto Rico

update

A boat carrying some 90 migrants has capsized off the coast of Puerto Rico, killing at least seven people.

U.S. Coast Guard officials in San Juan Friday said they rescued 83 people when the overladen boat capsized off the northern Puerto Rican coast.

The migrants are believed to be Dominicans.

Despite the threat of arrest both in the Dominican Republic and in Puerto Rico, thousands of Dominicans try to reach the U.S. commonwealth illegally each year, often on wooden boats called yolas.

Many boats capsize or sink in the treacherous Mona Passage separating the Dominican Republic from Puerto Rico.
