Bird Flu in Albania; 10th Person Dies in China

Albania has confirmed its first case of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu in poultry, while China has reported another human fatality caused by the virus.

Albania's agriculture minister says tests on a sick chicken from a coastal area, in the Sarande district near the border with Greece confirmed the presence of the H5N1 strain. Greek officials say they have stepped up precautionary measures.

Meanwhile, Belgian officials say a man who recently visited China has been admitted to a Brussels hospital with symptoms of the bird flu.

Also, reports from eastern China say a nine-year-old girl has died of bird flu. She was the country's 10th human victim of the disease.

China's official Xinhua news agency quotes the country's Health Ministry as saying the girl died Monday night at a hospital in Zhejiang province, about a month after her infection was discovered.

A man died from the H5N1 virus in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, which borders Hong Kong, less than a week ago.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
