Bomb in Baghdad Injures 2; Sunni Cleric Shot Dead at Checkpoint

A bomb blast in the Iraqi capital has injured two people, while a prominent Sunni Arab cleric has been shot dead at a security checkpoint north of Baghdad.

Officials say the bomb in Baghdad was planted on a motorcycle, and injured at least one policeman.

Meanwhile, Iraqi forces shot dead Sunni Arab cleric Karim Jassim Mohammed. The Reuters news agency quotes officials saying he failed to slow his vehicle as he approached a checkpoint on the way to Samarra.

Also, a Baghdad television station says journalist Mohammed Zaal was killed Tuesday as he filmed clashes between insurgents and U.S. troops near the western city of Ramadi. The circumstances surrounding his death are not clear.

U.S. and Iraqi officials say they plan to soon release some Iraqi detainees, including women. They say the decision has nothing to do with a demand from the kidnappers of American journalist Jill Carroll to release all Iraqi women in detention.
