On her first full day in office Chile's president Michelle Bachelet has paid tribute to her father, who died in prison 32 years ago during the military dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet.
President Bachelet went to the Santiago General Cemetery Sunday with several members of her family and laid flowers on the tomb of Alberto Bachelet, an air force general who opposed Pinochet's 1973 coup. Alberto Bachelet died of a heart attack after six months in prison, during which time he had been tortured.
President Bachelet had announced her intention to visit her father's grave after her inauguration Saturday. The ceremony in the coastal city of Valparasio was attended by officials from across the Americas.
