China's agriculture ministry is reporting a new outbreak of bird flu in the far northwestern Xinjiang region.
The report comes as Chinese officials defended the government against accusations it is failing to report cases of the virus.
But China's health minister, Gao Qiang said he is concerned that local health officials do not always have the expertise needed to identify outbreaks of bird flu.
The official Xinhua news agency says a state avian flu lab has confirmed that 300 poultry in Xinjiang died of the deadly H5N1 form of the virus.
Meanwhile, Indonesian health officials say a 25-year-old woman has died in a Jakarta hospital after testing positive for the disease. Those test results have not yet been confirmed by the World Health Organization.
