Jaafari, Reid to Discuss British Military Raid on Basra Prison

update

Iraq's Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari meets with Britain's Defense Minister John Reid in London Wednesday, to discuss this week's clash between Iraqi police and British troops in the southern Iraqi city of Basra.

A statement from Mr. Jaafari's office said Iraq's interior ministry will investigate Monday's incident and that both Iraqi and British governments are in close contact.

Some Iraqi officials have criticized the British military raid on a Basra prison that London says was aimed at freeing two undercover British soldiers. During the raid, British forces learned that the two soldiers had been transferred to the custody of a local militia.

The undercover soldiers, jailed for allegedly shooting two Iraqi policemen, were later rescued at a private house.

In Basra Wednesday, at least 300 Iraqis, including policemen, protested the raid, with some of them calling for the freed British soldiers to be tried in Iraq.
