FIFA Announces Program for 2006 World Cup Opening Gala

The International Football Federation, FIFA, has announced the program for the World Cup's opening gala next year, with pop legend Peter Gabriel, opera diva Jessye Norman and the hip-hop group Black Eyed Peas on the program.

FIFA has scheduled the gala for June 7, 2006 in Berlin's Olympic Stadium (Olympiastadion).

Veteran artistic director André Heller will oversee the production with British techno music pioneer Brian Eno composing the gala theme. Mark Fisher, who has designed stages for U2 and the Rolling Stones, will build the stage.

American Doug Jack will choreograph the event. He co-created five Olympic opening ceremonies, including the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City and last year's Games in Athens.

Tickets cost between $117 and $882, or 100 and 750 euros and went on sale Wednesday.

The opening match of the 2006 World Cup tournament is June 9 in Munich.
