The head of football's world governing body has announced that FIFA is looking into the possibility of canceling the playing of national anthems before football internationals.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter says he was shocked by the jeering and whistling that accompanied the playing of the Swiss anthem before the World Cup playoff against Turkey in Istanbul November 16.
Tensions between the Turkish and Swiss teams started in the first leg match in Bern November 12, when the visitors were angered by the home crowd jeering the playing of their anthem.
Blatter called it "disrespectful" and disparaging to national pride. He said it made him wonder whether it makes sense to play the national anthems.
