Lesotho Football Association president Thabo Makakole has been killed in a car accident near his hometown, Maseru. Reports say a commuter taxi collided with his vehicle Thursday evening. He was 46.
Makakole was chief of Lesotho football for more than a decade. He was also a member of FIFA's Appeals Committee. His death came just hours after his return from Cairo, where he made arrangements for Lesotho's participation in January's African Youth Championship.
Makakole had realized a long-standing dream with Lesotho's qualification for the under-20 event. It's the first time the small mountain kingdom in southern Africa has made it to the final tournament of a continental championship.
African Football Confederation president Issa Hayatouof said Makakole's death is sad for the whole African football family.
