It has been a bloody day in parts of central Iraq, with at least 19 Iraqis and eight U.S. Marines killed in fresh violence.
In one of the worst days for U.S. troops, the military says eight Marines were killed and nine wounded in al-Anbar province. That region includes the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah, where U.S. warplanes bombed insurgent targets Saturday inside the city, and troops clashed with rebels on the edge of town.
In Baghdad, a group calling itself the "1920 Brigades" claimed responsibility for a car bombing outside the al-Arabiyah television bureau. Seven people were killed and at least 16 wounded, including several staff members.
And south of Baghdad near the town of Haswa, more than a dozen people were killed in an exchange of gunfire, but circumstances surrounding the incident were not immediately clear.
