Leaders of Volvo Ocean Race Nearing Australia

update

The leading yachts in the Volvo Ocean Race are making steady progress toward the second-leg finish line. But race organizers say winds are expected to drop significantly, which would slow the front-runners.

ABN AMRO ONE and ABN AMRO TWO, both of the Netherlands, are currently in first and second place. ABN AMRO ONE is expected to cross the finish line in Melbourne, Australia early Saturday. Movistar of Spain is in third place.

The seven multimillion-dollar yachts in the race left Cape Town, South Africa, on January 2 on the 11,300 kilometer sail to Melbourne. The nine-leg, 58,000 kilometer race includes other stops in New Zealand, Brazil, the United States, Britain and the Netherlands before the finish in Goteborg, Sweden in June.
