MLB: Bonds Hits 710th Home Run


In Major League Baseball, Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants hit his second home run of the season - and the 710th of his career - but the Giants fell to the New York Mets, 4-1, Tuesday in National League play.

The Mets' Xavier Nady hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie, and Cliff Floyd's two-run homer in the eighth put the Mets ahead for good.

Bonds is now four home runs shy of tying baseball great Babe Ruth for second place on the all-time home run list with 714.

Other National League winners Tuesday include Chicago, Colorado, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Arizona and Houston. In the American League, the New York Yankees, Boston, Texas, Minnesota, Detroit, Toronto and the Chicago White Sox were victors.

The Chicago Cubs beat the Florida Marlins, 3-1, handing pitcher Dontrelle Willis his first loss ever in the month of April. The Colorado Rockies defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-6, as Cliff Barmes homered and had two RBIs. Juan Encarnacion homered, tripled and doubled to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-3.

The Cincinnati Reds downed the Washington Nationals, 6-5. The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Atlanta Braves, 4-2. The Arizona Diamondbacks routed the San Diego Padres, 7-0, and the Houston Astros needed 14 innings to get past the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-3.

In the American League, Derek Jeter homered and finished with three RBIs to lead the New York Yankees to a 9-1 rout of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Teammate Jason Giambi also had three RBIs. The Boston Red Sox beat the Cleveland Indians, 8-6; Manny Ramirez hit a tie-breaking, three-run homer in the eighth inning.

The Texas Rangers defeated the Oakland A's 6-5. The Minnesota Twins snapped their four-game losing streak and eked out a 2-1 win over the Kansas City Royals. Magglio Ordonez was 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

The Toronto Blue Jays dropped the Baltimore Orioles, 7-3, and the Chicago White Sox crushed the the Seattle Mariners, 13-3.
