Nepalese Journalist Dies While in Police Custody

A media rights group says a Nepalese journalist being held on suspicion of links to Maoist rebels has died in custody after being denied proper medical treatment.

The Federation of Nepalese Journalists says Maheswor Pahari died Tuesday at a hospital in Pokhra, about 200 kilometers from the capital, Kathmandu.

The group says Mr. Pahari fell ill nearly a one-and-a-half months ago, but was only recently admitted to the hospital.

Mr. Pahari was arrested by the army in January 2004 for allegedly having ties with Maoist rebels who have been fighting to replace the monarchy with a communist state in Nepal.

Under Nepal's anti-terrorism laws, authorities can detain anyone suspected of supporting the Maoists, for up to six months without trial.
