New Commander of UN Peacekeepers in Haiti Sworn In

Brazilian General Jose Elito Carvalho de Siqueira has taken command of the United Nations peacekeepers in Haiti.

After he was sworn in Monday in Port-au-Prince, the new commander said U.N. peacekeepers will try to provide security for presidential elections set for February 7. He said his troops would respect the rights of innocent civilians.

Last week, the humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders appealed to armed groups in Haiti's capital to respect the safety of civilians and aid workers there, amid escalating violence.

The 59-year-old Elito joined the Brazilian army in 1966. He will replace Lieutenant General Urano Teixeira da Matta Bacellar, also from Brazil, who was found shot to death in his hotel room in Port-au-Prince earlier this month. Investigators concluded he committed suicide.
