Nigerian Court Forbids Unions From Launching Strike

update

A Nigerian court has ruled it illegal for labor unions to call a general strike next week.

An appeals court in Abuja Thursday ordered unions to cancel their plans for a strike over rising fuel prices. The walkout was scheduled to begin Tuesday.

Union leaders would not immediately comment on the ruling.

They had said this strike - unlike other recent strikes - would include oil workers and would aim to disrupt Nigeria's oil exports.

Thursday's ruling upholds a high court decision that said unions do not have the right to strike over matters unrelated to work conditions.

Nigeria's unions are unhappy about a nearly 25 percent increase in fuel prices. The government says price hikes are needed to end costly subsidies.
