Saudi security forces are reported to have killed at least two suspected militants during a brief gun battle in a residential area north of the capital, Riyadh.
The Dubai-based Al Arabiya television says the four-hour gunbattle began early Thursday morning, when security forces ambushed a number of militants holed up in the area.
Saudi officials confirmed a security operation was taking place, but did not mention casualties.
Last week, the United States, Britain and Australia warned of imminent threats of attacks against Westerners in the kingdom.
The United States also closed its diplomatic missions in Saudi Arabia for two days August 8 -9.
