The Spanish football club Sevilla has advanced to the semifinals of the UEFA Cup tournament for the first time in its history by defeating Zenit St. Petersburg of Russia, 5-2, on aggregate.
Sevilla played the host Russian club to a 1-1 draw Thursday, but coupled with last week's 4-1 first-leg quarterfinal win, the Spanish club advances. South Korean Hyun Young-min gave the Russian club the lead in the 50th minute but Sevilla's Blanco Kepa tied the score 16 minutes later.
Both teams were reduced to 10 men after Kepa and Ivica Zrizanac of Zenit were sent off in the 67th and 68th minutes.
Meanwhile, Steaua Bucharest of Romania played cross-town rival Rapid Bucharest to a scoreless draw. Steaua advances to the semifinals because of the away goals rule.
Other quarterfinal matches late Thursday have Schalke of Germany taking on Levski Sofia of Bulgaria and England's Middlesbrough facing FC Basel of Switzerland.
The UEFA Cup semifinals start April 27. The UEFA Cup finals are scheduled for May 10 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Some information for this report was provided by AP.
