Tennis: Wimbledon Draw Announced

update

The draw for the third Grand Slam Tennis Tournament of the year - the Wimbledon Championships - has been announced at the All England Club outside of London.

Men's top seed Roger Federer of Switzerland opens his quest for a third consecutive title against Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu. But 2002 champion and third-seed Lleyton Hewitt of Australia is also in the top half of the draw and could face Federer in the semifinals. Hewitt begins against Christophe Rochus of Belgium.

Number two Andy Roddick of the United States starts off against Czech Jiri Vanek. But Roddick has a tougher route to the quarterfinals with potential opponents Ivo Karlovic and Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia and Xavier Malisse of Belgium in his way.

Fourth-seeded French Open champion Rafael Nadal of Spain plays American Vince Spadea in his opener, while number five Marat Safin of Russia takes on Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan.

In the women's draw, top-seeded American Lindsay Davenport opens against Alina Jidkova of Russia. Number two and defending champion Maria Sharapova of Russia goes up against Spain's Nuria Vives Llagostera, while third-seeded Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo faces Paola Suarez of Argentina.

Serena Williams is seeded fourth and will play fellow American Angela Haynes in the first round while number five Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia meets Rebecca Llewellyn of Britain.
