Ukraine's New Cabinet Meets, Pledges Transparency

Ukraine's new prime minister, Yuri Yekhanurov, has held his first Cabinet meeting in Kiev, and pledged his government will be transparent.

Mr. Yekhanurov says transparency does not mean his Cabinet members will be appearing regularly on television, but that the public will learn full details of the ministers' work.

The prime minister's reference to television appearances apparently referred to his predecessor, Yulia Tymoshenko, who held regular press briefings before President Viktor Yushchenko fired her last month, following corruption charges and infighting within her government.

Mr. Yekhanurov says he does not foresee any problems with Russia over natural gas. Ukraine buys its gas from Russia at a large discount, and fears have been growing that Moscow might raise the price.
