Typhoon Haiyan: Before and After

The image on the left is a NASA satellite image of the Philippines taken prior to Typhoon Haiyan. The light emissions - city lights, boat traffic and fires - are "baseline normal" for this region, with radiance values enhanced for emphasis. The horizontal line represents the path of Typhoon Haiyan.

The second image, taken after the typhoon hit on November 9, 2013, shows where the lights went out in the wake of the destruction. Drag the blue center slider with your mouse to track the before-after typhoon line.
