The United Nations estimates that 200 million girls and women in over 30 countries have undergone female genital mutilation. Somalia has the highest rate recorded by the U.N. with about 98 percent of the country’s female population between the ages of 15 and 49 having been subjected to FGM. The U.S. state of Minnesota is home to a large number of refugees from Somalia and has a high rate of FGM. VOA Somali Service reporter Sahra Abdi reports.
