Russian emergency officials say two women have died in an avalanche at the Sochi ski resort, the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.

Authorities say there were six skiers Sunday on the Labyrinth run of the Rosa Khutor complex when the avalanche struck. Four of the skiers escaped unharmed.

The resort says it has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the avalanche.

The slopes had opened to the public Saturday, following the closing of the Paralympics last week.
