Iranian media say an explosive device went off in northeastern Iran Saturday, killing only the suspected bomber.

The incident occurred in the city of Mashhad, near the office of the provincial governor. Reports say a young man set off an explosive device as he was approached by police, seriously wounding himself. He later died at a hospital. No other injuries or serious damage was reported.

Located near the Iranian border with Turkmenistan, Mashhad is the capital of Khoransan Razavi province and is one of Iran's largest cities.
