Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says the doctor who said he only has two years to live has never treated him.

Chavez says Salvador Navarrete must have been paid to make the claim and called him a "liar".

The Venezuelan leader says Navarrete never performed any tests on him. Navarrete told Mexico's Milenio magazine earlier this month that the Venezuelan president has aggressive type of cancer.

Navarrete says he fled Venezuela after his comments were published.

Chavez has said he travelled to Cuba in June to have a cancerous tumor removed from his pelvic area and has undergone four rounds of chemotherapy.

He said on October 20 that a series of medical tests in Cuba show he is cancer free.

He has previously said he will be healthy enough to campaign and win re-election to another six year term in 2012.

President Chavez has been in power since 1999.
