Chinese Judges Disciplined over Prostitution Scandal

Three Chinese judges from Shanghai have been expelled from the Communist Party and a fourth was placed on probation after an online video emerged allegedly showing the men hiring prostitutes.

An anonymous blogger last week posted the surveillance video, which appeared to show the men taking prostitutes to hotel rooms after dining with a construction company manager at a local luxury resort.

State media say a local disciplinary commission and the Shanghai Municipal Higher People's Court, where all four men work, have recommended that they be stripped of their positions.

A rising number of Chinese have taken to the Internet to expose government wrongdoing and corruption, which the Communist Party has acknowledged is rampant within its ranks.

President Xi Jinping, who took power in a leadership transition that began late last year, has said failure to deal with corruption could threaten the party's grip on power.

But while the government's anti-corruption campaign has exposed some low-level misdeeds, efforts to expose misconduct within senior levels of the party have been condemned as a threat to social stability.
