A magnitude 5.3 earthquake has shaken central Chile, but there are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey says Wednesday's earthquake was centered 66 kilometers northeast of the port city of Valparaiso and was registered at a depth of nearly 25 kilometers. There are reports that buildings shook in the Chilean capital, Santiago, 120 kilometers to the east.

In February of last year, an 8.8 magnitude quake devastated parts of the South American nation, leaving more than 500 people dead. The Finance Ministry said the quake cost the country about $30 billion.
