Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood

Formed in 1928 by imam Hassan al-Banna.

One of the oldest and most influential Islamic movements in the world.

Initially aimed at spreading Islamic morals and charity.

Banned after authorities blamed it for the 1954 assassination attempt on President Gamal Abdul Nasser.

Was banned for six decades.

Its Freedom and Justice Party won the most seats in 2012 parliamentary elections.

Its presidential candidate Mohammed Morsi will face Ahmed Shafiq in June's run-off election.
