Former U.S. Major League baseball star Jose Canseco was hospitalized late Tuesday after accidentally shooting himself in the hand.

The 50-year-old Canseco who helped the Oakland Athletics win the World Series in 1989, was reportedly cleaning his gun at his Las Vegas home when it fired.

Canseco's fiancée posted to his official Twitter account late Monday that the former baseball star was in surgery but "will be ok." She also urged people to "please pray for his finger!"

The Cuban-American outfielder retired from baseball in 2002.

Three years later, Canseco, an admitted steroid user, published an autobiography in which he claimed widespread use of performance enhancing drugs in baseball.
