At least 16 people died in a fight between rival gang members at a Guatemala prison. Several others were also wounded in the fighting.
Prison officials say the fight broke out Sunday at the jail located just 75 kilometers south of Guatemala City. Special police were called in to take control of the prison.
The maximum security prison, designed to hold just 600 inmates, is home to nearly 3,100 detainees.
The Associated Press quotes a prison spokesman as saying the fighting was between members of the Mara 18 and Mara Salvatrucha gangs and fellow inmates who don't belong to the gangs.
