Israeli and Palestinian negotiators have met for a second straight night, in what the U.S. State Department is calling an "intensive effort to resolve their differences."
In a statement late Monday, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the U.S. helped facilitate the meeting at the request of the two sides.
She said there are still gaps, but that both the Israelis and Palestinians are committed to narrowing them.
The U.S. said earlier that a round of negotiations on Sunday was "serious and constructive."
The American efforts to extend the peace talks past a late April deadline stalled last week after Israel balked at carrying out a planned prisoner release and the Palestinians revived a controversial bid for U.N. recognition as the "state of Palestine."
With the talks deadlocked, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry voiced his impatience at both sides, saying the United States would re-evaluate its mediator role.
