Mexican police have rescued football (soccer) player Alan Pulido, who had been kidnapped on Saturday night.

Officials say the rescue operation took place in the northeast border state of Tamaulipas.

The 25-year old Pulido, who plays with the Greek football club Olympiacos, was abducted by gunmen outside his home town of Ciudad Victoria as he left a party.

Following his rescue, he appeared for a brief news conference early Monday with police, where he told reporters that he was doing "very well."

His Greek team expressed relief that he was freed.

"Alan is safe and healthy with his family. We thank each and everyone of you for your concern and prayers in these difficult times," Olympiacos FC said on Twitter
