Nelson Mandela Hospitalized for Medical Checkup

South African peace icon Nelson Mandela has spent the night in a hospital.

South Africa's presidency says Mr. Mandela was admitted to the hospital Saturday for a scheduled medical checkup.

Presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj says the 94-year-old went to a hospital in the capital, Pretoria. Maharaj says there is "no reason for any alarm" as doctors conduct tests on the Nobel Peace laureate and former president.

Mr. Mandela was hospitalized in December for a lung infection.

Mr. Mandela spent nearly three decades in prison for opposing apartheid in South Africa and became a symbol of the nation's peaceful transition to a democratic government after decades of suppression by the white minority. He became South Africa's first black president in 1994.
