Gunmen Attack Northern Nigeria School

Suspected Boko Haram gunmen killed at least 40 students during an early morning attack on a high school dormitory in northeastern Nigeria.

Army spokesman Captain Eli Lazarus told VOA News that gunmen stormed the School of Agriculture in Yobe State early Sunday firing on students as they slept.

At least 18 students are being treated for injuries at a hospital in the state capital of Damataru. The school is located in Gubja, a rural area some 50 kilometers away.

Yobe state has seen a a series of brutal attacks by suspected Boko Haram militants in recent months. In July, militants attacked high school dormitories in Yobe state killing 29 students and a teacher.

Boko Haram, which translates roughly as "Western education is sinful", has been blamed for hundreds of deaths this year alone from attacks on government buildings, markets, schools, media houses and churches.
