Shi'ite Rebels in Yemen Seize City Near Capital

Shi'ite rebels in Yemen have seized control of a city north of the capital, sending thousands of families fleeing.

Rebels from the Hawthi group took over Amran Tuesday after months of fighting other tribes backed by the Yemeni army.

Witnesses report bodies scattered in the streets. The Yemeni Red Crescent says about 10,000 families have fled the city to escape the fighting.

There has been no comment yet from the Yemeni government. But the United Nations envoy for Yemen called on all sides to stop the fighting and abide by a cease-fire he negotiated last month.

Hawthi rebels have been battling against what they call marginalization by Yemen's central government for several years.

Some information for this report comes from AP and AFP.
