South Africa's Tutu in Hospital

South African peace icon Desmond Tutu has been admitted to a hospital for treatment related to a persistent infection.

A statement from his foundation Wednesday says the 81-year-old Tutu will undergo tests to discover the underlying cause of his illness. It says the non-surgical treatment is expected to take five days.

Tutu, who spent the morning in his office before checking into the hospital, was said to be "in good spirits"

The Nobel Prize laureate previously underwent treatment for prostate cancer in 1997 and again in 1999.

Tutu is lauded as a national icon in South Africa for his vocal opposition of the country's white-minority rule in the 1980s. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for challenging the apartheid government and the injustices allowed under the race-based system.
