Suicide Bomber Kills at Least 45 in Iraq

  • VOA News

Police in southern Iraq say a suicide bomber detonated his explosive-rigged minibus at a security checkpoint, killing at least 45 people and wounding more than 157 others.

Officials say the blast, which set many cars ablaze, was set off Sunday at the northern entrance of the Shi'ite-dominated city of Hillah, about 100 kilometers south of Baghdad.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack.

Iraq has been experiencing its worst violence in recent years, driven primarily by widespread discontent among its Sunni Arab minority and by the civil war in neighboring Syria. More than 1,400 people have been killed this year.
