Pakistani police say a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the entrance of the country's navy headquarters in Islamabad Wednesday, killing one security guard and wounding three others.

Officials say the attacker walked up to a checkpoint at the entrance of the heavily-guarded complex and detonated his explosives when security forces stopped him.

Insurgents in Pakistan have killed hundreds in bombings since military forces launched a major offensive in the South Waziristan tribal region two months ago.

Pakistani officials said Tuesday a teenage suicide bomber killed a provincial politician and wounded about a dozen others in the country's volatile northwest.

Authorities said the bomber killed assembly member Shamsher Ali Khan Tuesday at his house in Kanju, northwest of the Swat Valley's main town of Mingora.

REST OPT

Earlier this year, Swat Valley was the focus of a military offensive to rid the northwestern area of Taliban militants.

Also Tuesday, the Committee to Protect Journalists said the media environment in Pakistan is deteriorating rapidly.

The U.S.-based group said unidentified gunmen attacked the house of a prominent Dawn newspaper columnist, Kamran Shafi, in Rawalpindi last week.

The CPJ condemned the attack and said Pakistan's free press is under threat due to the political and military strife erupting under the government of President Asif Ali Zardari.
