Suicide Bombing Kills 21 at Iraqi Military Recruiting Center

A suicide bomber has attacked a military recruiting center in Iraq, killing at least 21 people and wounding at least 30 others.

The blast Thursday in central Baghdad happened as army recruits were waiting to register.

Police say the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber wearing a belt loaded with explosives. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

The attack follows the shooting deaths of at least 12 soldiers late Wednesday in Diyala province, north of the capital.

Iraq's military has been battling Islamic militants who took control in parts of the cities of Fallujah and Ramadi.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has called on local militias in the majority Sunni area west of Baghdad to "take the right side" and help with the government's fight.
