At Least 14 Killed in Afghanistan Suicide Bombings

Afghan officials say a suicide bomber sneaked into a crowded police dining hall at lunchtime Friday and detonated his explosives, killing 12 people.

The attack took place in southern Uruzgan province. Provincial officials say the police station is used as a base to patrol the main road into neighboring Kandahar province, a volatile region that has had a strong Taliban presence.

There was no initial claim of responsibility for the attack. Investigators also say it is unclear how the bomber made it past security checkpoints.

Earlier Friday, Afghan officials said a suicide bomber attacked a border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan, killing a border police commander and a civilian.

Eight people were wounded in the attack.

Authorities say there was no immediate claim of responsibility for the explosion Friday at the Spin Boldak crossing in Afghanistan. Such attacks are usually the work of Islamic militants.

In recent weeks, Taliban insurgents have accelerated their campaign of suicide attacks and roadside bombs against Afghan officials and Afghan and U.S.-led NATO troops.

Around 100,000 NATO troops based in Afghanistan are handing over security responsibility to Afghan forces before the international combat mission ends next year.
