Famed former American basketball player Shaquille O’Neal wants to join the police force as a reserve officer in the southern U.S. state of Florida.

Doral, Florida is about 20 kilometers from downtown Miami.

A spokeswoman with the city of Doral told Agence France-Presse news agency that the retired 42-year-old NBA star submitted his application this week and now has to undergo background checks and psychological and physical examinations, just like other reserve police officers.

The four-time NBA champion, who stands at 2.1-meters [7 ft. 1 in] has recently done TV commentary on NBA games.

Before retiring from professional basketball in 2011, O’Neal, who is widely called “Shaq," played for the Miami Heat, the Boston Celtics and the L.A. Lakers.

O’Neal served as a reserve officer in Miami Beach about 10 years ago.
