U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry paid his respects at the gravesite of former Polish Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki on Monday, November 4.

The visit to the tranquil cemetery on the outskirts of Warsaw was the first on Kerry's agenda during his two-day visit to Warsaw.

On Tuesday Kerry will meet with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski and Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Kerry is making a brief stop in Poland during his visit to the Middle East, where he will return on Tuesday afternoon. In addition to Riyadh, Jerusalem and Bethlehem, Kerry will make stops in Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria and Morocco.

Tadeusz Mazowiecki, who died on October 28, was the first non-communist prime minister in the Soviet bloc, whose appointment in 1989 helped usher in democratic change across eastern Europe.
