U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is threatening U.S. sanctions against those in the Central African Republic who keep destabilizing the country.

Kerry Sunday called on all C.A.R. leaders, past and present, to be clear in condemning the violence and stop it from gaining momentum. In a written statement, he said the U.S. will consider targeted sanctions on those who pursue their own selfish ends by abetting or encouraging violence.

Interim C.A.R. President Catherine Samba-Panza named a new prime minister Saturday.

The C.A.R. erupted in violence between Muslim and Christian militias last March when Muslim rebels toppled President Francois Bozize.
