Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has granted her formal consent to the wedding of her grandson Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29.

Under terms of a three-century-old act of Parliament, the Royal Marriages Act of 1772, a British monarch must give formal advance approval of a marriage that could affect the line of succession to the throne.

The "Instrument of Consent" signed by the queen is necessary to ensure the marriage's validity.
