Venezuelan Presidential Election Set for April 14

Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles has officially announced he will challenge acting president Nicolas Maduro in the April 14th presidential election.

Mr. Capriles on Sunday denounced Friday's inauguration of Mr. Maduro as acting president, calling it a "constitutional fraud." Mr. Capriles accepted the opposition coalition's nomination.

He lost October's presidential election to socialist Hugo Chavez, who died last week of cancer. President Chavez had named Vice President Maduro as his successor. Mr. Maduro has promised to continue President Chavez's socialist agenda.

Mr. Chavez died Tuesday, two years after announcing his illness. His death devastated millions of mostly poor supporters who revered him for offering the promise of a better future. His death also gave renewed hope to opponents who denounced him as a dictator.
