13 Killed in Mexican Fireworks Accident

Officials in central Mexico say a truck loaded with fireworks has exploded during a religious procession, killing at least 11 people and injuring more than 150 others.

Authorities say the accident happened Friday in the village of Jesus Tepactepec when a lit firework landed on the truck, igniting the fireworks it was carrying.

The victims were taking part in an annual procession in honor of the patron saint of the village that is named after him.

Fireworks are a typical feature of Mexican holidays and religious celebrations, but they often are manufactured, stored, transported and handled under unsafe conditions.
