US Officials Confident China Will Cooperate on N. Korea Sanctions

U.S. officials say they are confident that China will cooperate with Washington to enforce U.N. sanctions against North Korea.

Speaking in Beijing Friday, U.S. State Department sanctions coordinator Dan Fried said China is "part of the solution" and is working with the U.S. in a "cooperative spirit."

U.S. Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David Cohen told reporters that Chinese officials had been asked to scrutinize financial institutions in North Korea in line with a U.N. Security Counsel resolution. The resolution contains provisions that crack down on financial services and cargo shipments supporting the North's nuclear, missile and arms programs, among other concerns.

The two met with Chinese officials Thursday and plan more talks on Friday. Their visit comes after one by U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew and ahead of a visit by Secretary of State John Kerry.
