Sporadic Gunfire in Malian City of Timbuktu

Sporadic shooting continues in the Malian city of Timbuktu, where government troops are conducting house-to-house searches for Islamist militant fighters.

The militants -- linked to al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb -- infiltrated the Saharan city Saturday night in the chaos that followed a suicide bombing at a military checkpoint.

At least 11 militants have been killed in the latest fighting in Timbuktu, in which French fighter jets provided aircover for Malian troops.

The militants have been trying to retake Timbuktu, which they held for months until Malian and French troops recaptured it in January.
