Facebook Unveils New 'Home' Software for Android Phones

Facebook has unveiled a new "Home" software product for Android phones, as more of its 1 billion users access its social media site via smartphones and tablet computers.

Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said Thursday at the company's California headquarters that the new software lets phone users focus on people rather than apps . It allows users to see Facebook's "cover feed" when they turn on their smartphones and provides a "chat heads" feature that lets users communicate with their friends directly from their phone's home screen.

Zuckerberg says the software will be available for download April 12 on select devices, including Samsung and HTC products.

Facebook also announced that U.S. carrier AT&T has the rights to sell a brand new HTC-made smartphone for $100 that will come with the "Home" software preloaded on April 12.

The new Facebook software can help it challenge technology giants Apple and Google for the attention of smartphone users.
